I was never into fitness. In fact, I was in the bottom percentile on the Presidential Fitness Tests in elementary school.
I was picked last for the team in gym class and would always “forget” my gym clothes on gym day.
I graduated from high school weighing barely 140 pounds. (I realize now that there was nothing wrong with that, but I was teased for being skinny and I hated it.) I wanted to be bigger but also hated the idea of working out in front of people, so going to a gym was out.
I was one of those people who could eat or drink whatever I wanted without repercussions, so I weighed around 145 lbs right up until my mid-40s. Then I ballooned to 189 lbs within six months. By that point, I was also a full-blown alcoholic.
From a health standpoint, I was in rough shape.
My resting pulse rate was over 100 beats per minute, and my blood pressure was dangerously high, even with medication.
My liver was one step away from cirrhosis, and my self-esteem was at rock bottom. One morning, as I was pouring a glass of wine at 7 AM, I said to myself, “I guess this is it; you can’t do this anymore.”
I immediately called a detox center because I didn’t want to go through the emergency room. They scheduled me to check in two days later.
My last drink was on June 11, 2015. I was forty-six years old.
After quitting alcohol, I lost some weight but still ate poorly and didn’t do any type of exercise.
One day, my husband saw an online ad for a fitness class, and we decided to try it.
He did okay, but I was right back at the bottom percentile for my age—just like in the school fitness tests.
But this time, that experience changed my life.
Because of my past experiences, gyms and working out in front of others intimidated me.
But I didn’t let that stop me. I started doing pushups, planks, and sit-ups at home. I set small, attainable goals that I kept achieving, and before I knew it, I was hooked.
The first thing I noticed was how much better I felt—my anxiety decreased, my movement improved, and I started losing weight.
I was hooked.
After a couple of years of regular fitness training, I wanted to help others feel better about themselves and live healthier lives.
I began a personal trainer certification course in 2020, but COVID and untreated ADHD threw a wrench into those plans.
I believe things happen for a reason, and apparently, I wasn’t ready five years ago.
Five years later, my passion for fitness and helping others reach their goals has never faded.
I just came from my doctor today, who told me that I’m the healthiest he’s ever seen me. I’m 56 now.
He’s seen me at my worst, and now he tells me to “keep doing what you’re doing.”
If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about making a change.
Remember—it’s never too late to start a fitness program. It’s the best gift we can give to ourselves and to those we love.
