I was never into fitness. In fact, I was in the bottom percentile on the Presidential Fitness Tests in elementary school, I was picked last for the team in gym class and I always “forgot” my gym clothes on gym day. I graduated from high school, weighing barely 140 pounds. (I realize now that there was nothing wrong with that) but I was teased for being skinny and I hated it. I wanted to be bigger, but I also hated the idea of working out in front of people, so going to a gym was out. I was also one of those people that could eat or drink whatever I wanted without repercussion, so I weighed around 145 LBS. right up until my mid 40’s. Then I ballooned to 189 LBS in six months. I was also a full-blown alcoholic at this point.
Health wise, I was in rough shape. My resting pulse rate was over 100 beats per minute, my blood pressure was dangerously high, even with medication, my liver was one step away from Cirrhosis, and finally my self-esteem was destroyed. I woke up late one morning and said to myself as I was pouring a glass of wine at 7 AM. F@@k this you can’t do this anymore. I immediately called a detox center, ( I didn’t want to go through the emergency room) They scheduled me a room two days later. My last drink was June 11. 2015. I Was forty-six years old.
After quitting booze, I lost some weight but still ate garbage and didn’t do any type of exercise. One day my husband saw one of those fitness tests online, we tried it. He did ok, I was again in the bottom percentile for my age (just like the fitness tests.) But this time the test changed my life.
Because of my past experiences, gyms and working out in front of people intimidated me. Not letting that stop me, I started working on pushups and planks and sit ups. I set small obtainable goals, that I kept hitting. So, I kept challenging myself, and I kind of got hooked on that.
The first thing I noticed was how much better I felt and that my anxiety was down. I also noticed I was moving a little better and was starting to lose weight. I was hooked.
After a couple of years of a regular fitness program, I wanted to help other people feel good about themselves and to be healthier as we age. I started a personal trainer course in 2020, but Covid and untreated ADHD through a wrench into those plans.
I believe things happen for a reason, and apparently, I wasn’t ready five years ago. Five years later that passion for fitness and wanting to help other people meet their goals has never died.
I just came from the Dr today and he told me that this is the healthiest he has seen me. I am 56. My Dr. has seen me at my worst, and now he tells me “To keep doing what you’re doing”.
If you are reading this, you are probably thinking about making a change. I want people to realize that it is never too late to start a fitness program. It is the best gift we can give to ourselves and those we love.
